Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. It is surrounded by high mountains and charming villages, and the whole experience here is just more relaxed than Lake Como. Oh, and it tends to be more affordable than Como, too. I’ve visited Lake Garda myself multiple times, and every single time I leave feeling like I’ve found more things to love.
The mix of alpine views, enchanting Italian villages, and the calmness you feel by the water makes it such a beautiful place for an elopement. And because the lake is huge, there is always a quiet corner to escape to… You just need to choose the right time of year. 😊
The timing of your elopement matters more than you might think. The right season can be the difference between a stress-free, dreamy day and a hot, crowded, slightly chaotic one 😅 This guide will help you understand how each season feels at Lake Garda, what the weather is like, how crowded it gets, and what kind of elopement works best in each month.

Spring is one of my personal favorite seasons in Lake Garda. The landscape is incredibly lush and green. After winter, everything starts blooming, wildflowers slowly pop up along hillsides and mountain trails, the lemon groves start flowering, and the lake reflects this gorgeous deep blue.
The temperatures are warm but not hot, which is so important for comfort. You should always bring layers, but it is usually quite comfortable. And you won’t be melting like in peak summer heat! This matters more than people think. If you’re too hot, you get tired faster. You get flushed. You stop enjoying slow strolls through town. So choosing a season that allows you to feel physically comfortable changes your whole experience.
The tourist crowds are still manageable. Families with school-age children mostly travel in summer, so spring gives you a much more peaceful experience. You can walk cobblestone streets, stop for a gelato, and wander a harbor without bumping into too many tourists.
April specifically can bring some rain and more unpredictable weather, so it’s worth having a backup plan (which I always have prepared!). But those soft, moody skies are even more atmospheric than a perfectly clear day.
May and June are the sweet spot when it is reliably warm, green, and not yet overrun with people. If you’re flexible, this is the window I recommend most.

I want to be honest with you here, because that’s what I’m here for. July and August are peak season at Lake Garda. The lake is absolutely gorgeous — sunny skies, warm evenings, that full summer Italian magic. But it also means higher prices, more tourists, and heat that can get quite uncomfortable. When it’s 35°C (95°F), and you’re in a wedding dress, the last thing you want is to feel rushed or overheated.
That said, it is not impossible! If summer is the only time that works for you, there are ways we can make it work beautifully. A weekday sunrise can feel surprisingly peaceful, even in peak season. The northern side of the lake is quieter than the southern end. And there are small, tucked-away spots we can find for some privacy. I also recommend scheduling a mid-day break during the hottest part of the day.
When you choose me as your Italy elopement photographer, I always explain the “why” behind timing recommendations to my couples, because understanding it helps you feel confident in the plan. And the why here is simple: comfort and privacy hugely affect how relaxed and present you feel on your elopement day. And feeling relaxed and present is literally what this is all about 😊
Autumn is my other personal favorite. If spring is fresh and vibrant, autumn is warm and golden and a little dreamy in a completely different way.
September still has lovely warm temperatures, being warm enough for bare shoulders or a light jacket, but without the summer heat. The tourist crowds start to thin out once the school year begins, especially toward the second half of the month.
October is getting more cozy with cooler days and evenings and fewer visitors. In higher elevations and wooded areas, you’ll start to see touches of amber and rust, and occasional morning fog creates the most cinematic atmosphere. October comes with a higher chance of rain, but you should always be prepared for the weather and ready to pivot, no matter the season!
Winter is the calmest time at Lake Garda. Many hotels and restaurants close for the season, and the weather can be chilly and unpredictable. But if you love moody skies, cozy, quiet villages, and the idea of the lake all to yourselves, winter can be magical in its own way. Just know that logistics require more planning since not everything will be open.
I just had the honor of capturing a winter elopement in Lake Garda, and it was absolutely beautiful! It’s not the most popular choice for elopements, but it’s perfect for couples who want complete privacy and don’t mind bundling up.

One of the things couples ask me most about is how to have a truly private, intimate experience at a popular destination like Lake Garda. And I love this question, because it shows me you’re thinking about the experience, not just the photos.
What I’ve learned from exploring this area many times is that privacy is absolutely achievable, you just need to know where to go and when to go there.
Sunrise timing is my secret weapon for privacy, regardless of season.
The southern end of the lake is more popular with tourists and families, while the northern side is noticeably quieter and has a more dramatic alpine feel. There are steep mountain backdrops, amazing blue water, and some off-the-beaten-path spots to find more privacy.
This is exactly why having a local expert to guide you matters so much. It’s the difference between a beautiful day and an extraordinary one.

I really recommend getting married in May & June or September & October. However, every season has something beautiful to offer. What matters most is choosing a time that feels right for your comfort level, your vision, and the kind of atmosphere you want to experience on your elopement day.
No matter when you choose, Lake Garda has something beautiful to offer. The most important thing is that you go in feeling relaxed, knowing that everything is taken care of, and that your only job on the day is to be present with each other and have fun. That’s what I’m here for 😊❤️
