Lake Como is probably one of the first places that comes to mind when you think about getting married in Italy. Beautiful Italian villas covered in greenery, little colorful towns by the water, mountains surrounding the lake, gelato, pasta, cobblestone streets… It definitely has the whole Italian-romance thing going for it 😊
And there is a reason Lake Como has become one of the most popular destinations in Italy for weddings and elopements. But popularity also comes with a few things you should know before planning your Lake Como elopement. It can get VERY busy, some of the most beautiful villas come with significant rental fees, parking can be… an experience 😅 and moving around the lake takes a little more planning than you might expect.
So, in this guide I’ll walk you through when to elope at Lake Como, ceremony locations, activities, transportation, and some practical things I learned from spending time there myself.

First of all, it’s the variety! You can have so many completely different experiences within one elopement day without needing to drive from one side of Italy to another. You could get ready in a beautiful little villa overlooking the lake, take a boat across the water, wander around an Italian town and get gelato, exchange your vows somewhere in the mountains, and finish your day with pizza or a beautiful dinner by the lake.
That is a LOT of Italy squeezed into one day 😊
Lake Como also feels different from many mountain elopement locations. You still have the mountains surrounding you, but you can combine those landscapes with elegant architecture, historical villas, and cute little towns. So if you can’t decide between an adventurous nature elopement and a more luxurious Italian experience… you don’t necessarily have to choose. Here you can have both!
That said, since Lake Como tends to be more on the luxurious side for elopements, that comes with a higher price tag than most other Italian destinations.
Prefer something a little more off the beaten path? While Lake Como tends to get all the spotlight, Lake Garda is its lesser-known but equally stunning sibling. Actually, depending on what you care about, I think Garda can be even more epic in some ways. Lake Garda is bigger, the surrounding mountains can feel more dramatic, there are generally fewer crowds, and the overall experience feels a little more relaxed. It can also be more affordable. For me, the best months for a Lake Como elopement are April, May, September, and October, which is basically shoulder season.
Spring is a beautiful time around Lake Como. Temperatures are milder, everything starts becoming green, and you avoid the worst of the summer crowds. April can still have cooler or rainy days, so I would definitely have a little flexibility built into your plans. May is warmer and very beautiful, although tourism naturally starts picking up as summer gets closer.
June can still work really well, especially earlier in the month. The weather is warmer, and everything is very lush, but you are starting to move into the busy summer season.
These are the months I personally would avoid if you have the flexibility. Lake Como is already one of Italy’s biggest tourist destinations, and July and August are peak European vacation season.
That means more crowds, more traffic, fuller ferries, higher accommodation prices, and hotter weather. And wearing wedding attire outside all day when it is extremely hot is simply not the most enjoyable way to spend your elopement 😅
September and October are another favorite of mine. September is still warm, but once the main summer holiday season ends, things start getting more relaxed. I was at Villa del Balbianello on a mid-September afternoon, and there were still quite a lot of people, so it is definitely not going to be empty. But overall, shoulder season gives us a much better chance of creating a calmer experience.
October gets quieter, and temperatures start cooling down, which can be really lovely if you want to explore and be outdoors for most of the day.
The villas at Lake Como are absolutely breathtaking. The two most popular choices for elopement ceremonies are:
Villa del Balbianello: If you’ve searched for Lake Como wedding inspiration, there is a VERY good chance you’ve already seen Villa del Balbianello. And if it looks strangely familiar… there might be a reason 😅 The villa has also been used as a filming location, including for Star Wars and Casino Royale.
For a private 2-hour slot, it costs around €3,000, and bookings only open 3 months in advance, so flexibility is really important here. Larger events get priority when slots open up, which means you might be offered alternative times. This is one of the reasons I include buffer days in my packages, so we always have a backup plan 😊
If budget is a concern but you still want to be there, you can also visit non-privately for around €600 for a 2-hour photography permit, though you will have other visitors around, so there won’t be full privacy.
Villa del Balbianello is accessible by boat, or by a 10–15 minute uphill walk from the parking area. The walk itself is doable, but walking uphill in wedding attire, carrying flowers and everything else you need, isn’t necessarily how you want to begin this part of your day 😅
A private boat ride to and from the villa typically costs around €1,000–1,500, and it’s a gorgeous experience in itself.

Villa Monastero: It has beautiful gardens right by the lake and is logistically easier to combine with spending time in Varenna. You can book a private 1-hour slot in the loggia area for around €1,000, with the garden section available for an additional €300.
That said, the garden isn’t fully private as people do walk through, so it’s more semi-private than completely exclusive. It’s easily accessible from Varenna, which is one of my favorite towns on the lake, and it is a more budget-friendly alternative to Villa del Balbianello.

This is my personal favorite option for couples who want total freedom, breathtaking scenery, and zero venue hire costs 😊 The mountains around Lake Como have some incredible viewpoints that you can reach on foot, and the views over the lake from above are honestly unreal. I’ve personally scouted two beautiful, relatively easy-to-reach ceremony spots that I share with my couples when we start planning together. This is a great way to have a genuinely private, adventurous ceremony without the stress of booking a villa.

The third option is to book a beautiful villa or boutique accommodation with its own private terrace, garden, or grounds, and hold your ceremony right there. You can wake up together, have breakfast, get ready without rushing anywhere, and have your ceremony right outside before heading off for your adventures.
Just make sure to ask your accommodation whether events, ceremonies, and professional photography are allowed.
This depends entirely on where and what kind of ceremony you’re having. A symbolic ceremony between the two of you somewhere in nature is very different from legally getting married at a municipality-approved location.
Private villas have their own booking requirements and photography rules. Villa del Balbianello, for example, requires you to book professional photo shoots in advance. If you want your Lake Como ceremony to be legally binding, there is another layer of paperwork and location requirements.
This is why I always recommend deciding first: Do you actually need your Italian ceremony to be the legal ceremony?
Many of my international couples handle the paperwork at home and then have a symbolic ceremony in Italy. That gives us SO much more freedom when choosing your ceremony location, time of day, and overall timeline.
But if you are curious, I talk more about getting legally married in Italy here!

One of the things I love most about Lake Como is that the day can look so many different ways depending on what feels like you. The best photos happen while you’re having an amazing day together. Here are some of my favorite ways to fill your elopement day:

Lake Como is easy to reach from Milan. It’s about an hour by car or train, depending on where on the lake you’re heading.
A few things worth knowing before you arrive:
Car and parking: If you’re driving, please know that parking at Lake Como is tricky. Street parking is essentially impossible in most popular towns, and the parking lots that exist are VERY narrow 😅 My strong recommendation: when you book your accommodation, make sure it includes a private parking space. This will save you so much stress. But also be prepared for extremely narrow underground parking spots that the lodgings have. You need to get your things out of the car BEFORE you start parking, then park and squeeze yourself out of the car 😅
Ferries: The ferries are a wonderful way to get around the lake, and I really recommend using them. However, what I found is that the ferry information online and even the screens at the ferry docks can be confusing and sometimes inaccurate. Timetables online and at the port often showed different information, and figuring it out felt unnecessarily complicated. The easiest thing to do was to go directly to the ferry station, talk to the staff, and buy your ticket on the spot. It sounds old-fashioned, but it’s genuinely the most stress-free approach 😊
Interestingly, the official ferry operator also advises travelers to follow staff instructions at the dock, especially since several boats can be present at once.
Lake Como is one of Italy’s most luxurious destinations, and the price tag reflects that. From venue hire to food to accommodation, costs are noticeably higher here than in most other parts of Italy.
You CAN create a Lake Como elopement without renting a luxury villa and still have an amazing time. But if your dream involves places like Villa del Balbianello, a private boat, luxury accommodation, and several vendors, it’s worth starting the planning process knowing this is one of Italy’s more expensive elopement destinations.

Lake Como is really beautiful! But the experience you have there depends a lot on how we plan it.
Choosing shoulder season instead of peak summer, figuring out transportation before the wedding day, building enough buffer into ferry schedules, finding ceremony locations away from the biggest crowds, and choosing accommodation based on logistics can completely change how the day feels.
My goal isn’t just to bring you to Lake Como and take beautiful pictures. I want you to actually enjoy being there! You shouldn’t spend your elopement worrying whether you’re going to find parking, whether you’re about to miss a ferry, or whether there are 200 tourists standing behind your ceremony 😅
When my couples book me, I help with the whole picture: locations, timeline, activities, logistics, trusted vendors, and backup plans. That’s what lets you show up, take it all in, and have fun—which is exactly how I think an elopement should feel.
If Lake Como is calling your name and you’d like to talk through what your elopement there could look like, I’d love to hear from you. Reach out and let’s start dreaming it up! ❤️
