If you’ve been dreaming of an elopement surrounded by dramatic cliffs, misty mountain peaks, and the wild Atlantic Ocean, but you don’t want to follow the same crowd to Iceland or the Dolomites, let me introduce you to a place that absolutely blew my mind. Madeira Island, Portugal. 😊
I’ve traveled a lot, and Madeira is by far one of my favorite places in the world. ❤️
Here’s everything you need to know to plan your Madeira elopement.
Madeira is a small Portuguese island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,000 km off the coast of Portugal. It takes just about an hour and a half to drive from one side to the other. But don’t let its size fool you. The highest peaks reach over 1,800 meters (that’s nearly 6,000 feet!), and the landscape is so diverse that you could spend days exploring and still not see it all.
What sets Madeira so special compared to other popular elopement spots is that it’s still relatively under the radar. While couples flock to the fjords of Norway, the peaks of Iceland, or the Dolomites, Madeira is absolutely stunning and much less crowded. You get epic backdrops, wild and lush nature, ocean views meeting mountain views, and much more privacy and ease than you’d expect.
The island stays lush all year round. The mix of dramatic peaks and the ocean makes the landscape look like something from a fantasy movie. No matter where you look, it’s always beautiful. I wasn’t ready for how much I’d fall in love with this place 🥺

Madeira has its own international airport located just outside Funchal on the southern coast. It’s well connected to major European cities, with direct flights from London, Frankfurt, Berlin, Lisbon, and many more. The biggest budget carriers, easyJet and Ryanair, both fly there regularly, as do TAP Air Portugal and British Airways. Flight times are roughly 3.5–4 hours from most of central and northern Europe.
One fun fact to bear in mind is that the airport in Madeira is one of the most difficult airports in the world to land on. The runway is short and the runway is built on to the sea right next to mountains in a wind corridor. This means, spare some buffer time. Not every aircraft can land on the first try. Sometimes not even on the second. Sometimes landing on a neighbor island is needed and you’ll get transported to Madeira on a ferry. Sometimes refueling in Lisbon is needed 😅 Pilots landing there have gone through a special training. BUT it’s an adventure worth having, though!
Yes, foreigners can legally get married in Portugal, and compared to many other European countries, the process is actually easier here. Two non-residents can get married, LGBTQ+ marriage is legal, and the marriage is internationally recognized. So from a legal standpoint, Madeira is a great option! 😊
That said, and I always want to be upfront with my couples about this because it really affects your experience, it’s not simple. You still have to fill out paperwork, and since ceremonies in Portugal are conducted in Portuguese, you’ll need a translator. There are a few things that require a bit more logistics than, say, just showing up.
I highly recommend doing the legal part at home and having a symbolic ceremony in Madeira. If you do the legal part in Madeira, you need a translator AND an officiant who are both able and willing to come to your chosen location with you. If you want to hike to a mountain viewpoint for your ceremony (which, trust me, you’ll want to), the officiant and translator need be able and willing to do the hike as well.
Doing the legal part at home first gives you complete freedom to pivot if the weather changes, choose any location on the island, and have only the people you actually want present at your ceremony. It makes the whole day SO much more flexible and relaxed, which is exactly what a Madeira elopement should be 😊

Even though Madeira is lush and mild all year round, if I had to choose the best times, I’d say April to May or October to November. These shoulder seasons give you fewer tourists, more privacy on the trails (especially the popular ones), and lovely moderate temperatures.
Temperatures range from around 16°C (61°F) in February to a peak of 24°C (75°F) in August. Your sweet spot months of April–May sit at a lovely 18–19°C (64–66°F), and October–November at 20–22°C (68–72°F), which are warm enough to be comfortable and cool enough to hike without overheating.
Even though Madeira is less touristy than Italy, there are still hikers around, and on the most popular hikes like Pico Ruivo and Pico de Areiro, it’s almost impossible to have complete privacy, because those spots are very well-known amongst hikers. Luckily, I know some really cool secluded spots on the island!
One thing you have to bear in mind is that the weather here changes very fast. In a single day, you might see thick clouds, full sunshine, a bit of rain, and strong winds. It might sound a little scary, but I promise it’s actually a good thing! It’s what makes the photos look so epic! 🥰
The wind makes your dress and veil fly, and the dramatic clouds create a beautifully moody atmosphere. As long as you come prepared with layers and have a photographer who knows how to adapt and make the most of any conditions (hi! 😊), the moodiness adds to the magic.
January through March have a higher chance of storms, and this year, Madeira even had snowstorms in March for the first time ever, where the higher mountain roads were completely closed. So if you’re planning to elope during those months, just be aware. For the best balance of weather, green landscapes, and manageable tourist numbers, April to May and October to November are your best options.

Madeira has two distinct sides. The southern side is warmer and sunnier. The clouds tend to come in from the north, get caught on the mountain peaks, and stay there, so the south gets more sun. This is where the capital city, Funchal, is located. It’s more urban and populated, but absolutely beautiful in its own way. Great for city vibes, botanical gardens, and warmer days for sunbathing.
The northern side is wilder, moodier, and much more dramatic. The cliffs are higher, the greenery is more intense, and the views are truly jaw-dropping. This is where hikers go. If you want epic, dramatic landscape shots, the north is for you.
For a multi-location multi-day elopement (which I absolutely love and recommend doing!), you can experience both sides of the island. It’s small enough to make it very doable 😊
Seixal Beach is a stunning black-sand beach on the northern coast, with amazing sunrises. When the sun comes out and hits the landscape, everything turns green and golden. The waves, the cliffs, the color of the water… It’s breathtaking. Plus, Seixal beach is very easily accessible by car.

Also on the Northern Coast of the island, Ribeira de Janela is a stony beach where enormous rock formations rise about 40 meters above the sea. This location is also very easy to reach by car.

I’ve never seen anything quite like this anywhere else in the world. The forest is almost always sitting inside a cloud, and these ancient, twisted trees rise through the fog looking absolutely mystical and otherworldly. And even though this is one of the most popular spots, it is still worth visiting. Even if there are other people, more often than not you hear them, but you can not see them 😂

These are the two most well-known hikes on the island. Pico Ruivo is the highest point of Madeira, and Pico de Arieiro is the most famous trail. They are both absolutely spectacular, and I recommend doing at least one of them during your travels, even though they do get quite busy, especially at sunrise and sunset.

This is personally my favorite trail on the island. It’s a peninsula trail with the ocean on both sides and dramatic volcanic rock formations everywhere. Absolutely gorgeous!

You definitely need layers. Temperatures are usually mild, but the wind can pick up, especially at higher elevations, and it can rain. So having layers you can add or remove throughout the day is very important. Good hiking shoes are a must if you’re planning any trails.
I would also recommend a dress with a flowy skirt, because if the wind picks up, you’re going to have some really epic photos. A longer train would look amazing, too! And a long veil (like 2 or 3 meters) so you really pop in those big-view photos. You, standing on a cliff edge with mountains behind you and the ocean below, need to stand out in that photo. The more white fabric you have flowing around you, the more you’ll pop against the dramatic backdrop. And if the wind picks up that veil? Even better 😅

Madeira is such an incredible place to spend a few days before or after your elopement, and there’s so much you can do. And I highly recommend staying here as long as you can to make the most out of your trip and truly celebrate your elopement!
Here are some of my recommendations:
My last recommendation is simply to drive and try to get lost. Drive around as much as you can. Pull over at every viewpoint. There is no part of this island that isn’t beautiful, and every corner turns into a new and unique scene. It’s small enough that you can cover a lot of ground in one day.

Madeira is one of the most affordable high-quality elopement destinations out there. It is definitely more affordable than Italy, Iceland, Norway, or any other popular elopement destination. The accommodations are cheaper, and the car rental is more affordable. The food prices are kind of the same as in Italy, but the portions are so big that you can actually feed two people from it. The flights cost more than to central Europe, because the destination is way off the mainland of Europe.
Since you’ll spend a lot of your time hiking (which is almost free once you pay the trail permit), the overall cost is very reasonable compared to other popular elopement destinations. But I do recommend renting a car to drive around there. It just gets you to many locations much more easily.

Madeira is an epic location for couples who want to hike on their elopement day or during their honeymoon. I genuinely think it’s an underrated alternative to the Dolomites as an elopement destination. You get the mountains AND the ocean. It is more lush and not quite as stony as the Dolomites.
I’ve been to many beautiful places. Madeira is still in my top favorites. ❤️
Thinking about eloping in Madeira? Every couple who books me for a Madeira elopement gets my full, detailed guide, including where to stay, where to eat, which car rental company I recommend, what type of car to get for the mountain roads, and everything else you need to know. It’s all taken care of 😊
