While Lake Como tends to get all the spotlight, Lake Garda is its lesser-known but equally stunning sibling. In fact, it’s even more epic in some ways. Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. The surrounding mountains are higher, the crowds are smaller, and the overall experience is just a little more relaxed. Oh—and it’s also more affordable.

There are plenty of reasons to elope at Lake Garda, but here are my favorites:

Lake Garda is full of charming towns like Riva del Garda and Malcesine, where cobbled streets, olive trees, and gelato shops make the perfect setting for a relaxed and romantic day.

3. Better Value Than Lake Como

Lake Garda is generally more affordable than Lake Como—whether it’s accommodation, food, or activities. You still get the luxury feel without the luxury price tag.

Your elopement day could consist of activities like this (and YES, most of these are manageable in one full day!)

• Ceremony either
  • by the lake,
  • in the lake,
  • on top of the mountain with a view of the lake or
  • in a beautifully decorated garden with a lake view

• A little hike on either side of the lake on the mountains

Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda is located at the very northern tip of the lake. It has dramatic mountain views, beautiful lake access by a stunning garden. It is also the place where I’ve had the best Pasta Carbonara I’ve ever tasted… 🤭

Malcesine

This colorful town is one of the prettiest places on the lake. It has narrow alleys, a medieval castle, and access to one of the best mountain spots around: Monte Baldo.

Monte Baldo is a dream location for couples who want views without the hike. You can take a gondola straight from Malcesine up to the top, where alpine landscapes open up all around you.

Lake Garda is home to some incredible gardens and villas that are open to the public. Add a stop at one for peaceful moments together, or explore an old castle for something dramatic and historic.

Enjoy Local Food and Wine

Have a lakeside dinner, stop by a vineyard, or grab a pizza at a local pizzeria. Elopements here can be both simple and luxurious at the same time.

Don’t limit yourself with daylight time

If you have a professional photographer (like me, hi! 👋) who knows how to take pictures at blue hour (the first hour after the sun has set) or in completely dark, you wouldn’t have to finish the day at sunset. You could just chill on the docks until you feel like it and listen to music just like Kaisa and Laur did!

When to Elope at Lake Garda

The best months for a Lake Garda elopement are May through October. Here’s what to expect:

• April, May & June: Lush greenery, fewer tourists, and warm-but-not-hot weather
• July & August: Peak season with hotter temps and more crowds, if possible, I’d recommend either spring or autumn instead
• September & October: Golden light, fewer people, and cooler evenings

Legal or Symbolic Ceremony?

Most couples choose to have a symbolic ceremony at Lake Garda and take care of the legal paperwork at home. It’s much easier, gives you more freedom with timing and location, and avoids dealing with Italian legal requirements.

• Verona: Closest airport and train station
• Milan: About 2–3 hours by car or train
• Venice: Around 2.5 hours away

Riva del Garda and Malcesine are both accessible by car and having your own vehicle makes exploring the area much easier.
