If you’re dreaming of mountains, lakeside charm, and a relaxed Italian atmosphere, a Lake Garda elopement might be exactly what you’re looking for.
While Lake Como tends to get all the spotlight, Lake Garda is its lesser-known but equally stunning sibling. In fact, it’s even more epic in some ways. Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. The surrounding mountains are higher, the crowds are smaller, and the overall experience is just a little more relaxed. Oh—and it’s also more affordable.
I’ve explored Lake Garda myself several times and fallen in love with its mix of alpine views, Italian romance, and lakeside villages. If you’re thinking about eloping at lake Garda in Italy, this guide will walk you through all the key details.
There are plenty of reasons to elope at Lake Garda, but here are my favorites:
The northern part of Lake Garda is surrounded by towering mountains that create postcard-perfect views in every direction. You can have your ceremony by the lake or head up into the peaks for something more adventurous.
Lake Garda is full of charming towns like Riva del Garda and Malcesine, where cobbled streets, olive trees, and gelato shops make the perfect setting for a relaxed and romantic day.
Lake Garda is generally more affordable than Lake Como—whether it’s accommodation, food, or activities. You still get the luxury feel without the luxury price tag.
Your elopement day could consist of activities like this (and YES, most of these are manageable in one full day!)
Riva del Garda is located at the very northern tip of the lake. It has dramatic mountain views, beautiful lake access by a stunning garden. It is also the place where I’ve had the best Pasta Carbonara I’ve ever tasted… 🤭
This colorful town is one of the prettiest places on the lake. It has narrow alleys, a medieval castle, and access to one of the best mountain spots around: Monte Baldo.
Monte Baldo is a dream location for couples who want views without the hike. You can take a gondola straight from Malcesine up to the top, where alpine landscapes open up all around you.
And of course there are some secret spots I know, but what I won’t put online so that they wouldn’t get too crowded 🤫
If you’re eloping at Lake Garda, don’t limit yourself to just a ceremony. Here are some ideas to create a full-day experience:
Nothing says Italian romance like a boat ride across Lake Garda. It’s relaxing, scenic, and makes for incredible photos. Whether you book a private wooden boat or a modern speedboat, it’s a beautiful way to celebrate after your vows.
Lake Garda is home to some incredible gardens and villas that are open to the public. Add a stop at one for peaceful moments together, or explore an old castle for something dramatic and historic.
Have a lakeside dinner, stop by a vineyard, or grab a pizza at a local pizzeria. Elopements here can be both simple and luxurious at the same time.
If you have a professional photographer (like me, hi! 👋) who knows how to take pictures at blue hour (the first hour after the sun has set) or in completely dark, you wouldn’t have to finish the day at sunset. You could just chill on the docks until you feel like it and listen to music just like Kaisa and Laur did!
The best months for a Lake Garda elopement are May through October. Here’s what to expect:
Most couples choose to have a symbolic ceremony at Lake Garda and take care of the legal paperwork at home. It’s much easier, gives you more freedom with timing and location, and avoids dealing with Italian legal requirements.
If you do want a legal ceremony in Italy, it’s possible, but there’s more paperwork and planning involved. I’m happy to walk you through it or connect you with a planner who can help. Read more about a legal ceremony in Italy HERE.
Your outfit should reflect your style but also work with the setting. Most couples choose:
And remember, your dress doesn’t have to be white. Lake Garda’s soft light and bold backdrops look stunning with both classic and colorful tones. Read more about how to choose a wedding dress HERE.
Lake Garda is easy to reach by car or train from several major cities:
Riva del Garda and Malcesine are both accessible by car and having your own vehicle makes exploring the area much easier.
A Lake Garda elopement is perfect for couples who want a mix of mountains, lake views, and Italian charm. It offers everything from adventure to relaxation—and it’s still a hidden gem compared to more famous destinations like Lake Como.
Whether you’re hiking to a panoramic viewpoint, sharing vows by the water, or cruising across the lake in a boat, this place has everything you need for an unforgettable day.
If you’re dreaming about eloping here, I’d love to help you plan the details and capture every moment. From timeline tips to secret locations, I’ve got you covered.
