If you’ve been dreaming of a Dolomites elopement, you’ve probably already fallen down the rabbit hole of stunning locations, with mountain meadows, turquoise lakes, and dramatic rock formations. And they’re all incredible. But what if I told you there’s a way to take your elopement completely off the map? Literally! A way to land on top of a mountain that no one else can reach on foot, with zero other people around, just you two and the most jaw-dropping views you’ve ever seen?
That’s a helicopter elopement. And it might just be the most epic thing you’ll ever do. 😊
Why a Helicopter Elopement in the Dolomites?
One of the most common questions I get from couples planning their Dolomites elopement is… how do we get some privacy?
The Dolomites are one of the most popular hiking destinations in Europe, and in peak season, some of the most beautiful spots can have thousands of visitors per day. Thousands!! In a DAY! It can be quite hard to have a fully private day.
However, hiring a helicopter can definitely help with that! You skip the crowds entirely, because you’re going somewhere the crowds simply cannot go. My couple and I went to one of my favorite landing spots, a mountaintop rising seemingly out of nowhere, completely inaccessible on foot. The moment we landed and stepped out, it felt like we were on top of the world, because we really kind of were! 🥰
What Are the Helicopter Elopement Location Options in the Dolomites?
There are a few spots to choose from for a helicopter elopement in the Dolomites, and they each give a very different feel:
The private rock top: This is my favorite, and the one I most often recommend. It’s a dramatic elevated spot that you simply cannot reach on foot. That means 100% privacy, guaranteed. No one else is up there. Just you, me, and the mountains all around you! This is where we did the ceremony, and it was truly one of the most unique and special locations I’ve ever shot at. It genuinely felt like a huge rock just appeared out of nowhere and you’re standing right on top of it 😀
The alpine lake or mountain areas: Stunning locations with a beautiful mountain backdrops. These can technically be accessed on foot, too, but it takes quite a bit of effort to get there. So, privacy can’t be fully guaranteed, but it will be definitely less crowded than the most known places in the Dolomites. And arriving by air while others are hiking up is pretty cool 😊
What’s the Helicopter Flight Actually Like?
I’ll be honest, before my first helicopter flight in the Dolomites, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I was genuinely, pleasantly surprised by how smooth and calm it was. This is not speed-racing between mountain peaks 😀
And the views from above were absolutely unreal! Flying do closely above the Three Peaks of Lavaredo is a completely different experience from seeing them from the ground. And the alpine lakes were very, very, very blue from above as well! I truly believe that everyone (unless they are genuinely terrified of heights) should experience a helicopter flight at least once in a lifetime, and an elopement is the most perfect excuse to do it. ❤️
My couple was blown away by the experience, and they told me afterward they were so glad they went for it. And, of course, I was very glad about it too!
Things to Know About Planning Your Helicopter Elopement
Be Prepared to Pivot
Helicopter flights are completely weather-dependent. Clouds, rain, strong winds, thunder – safety always comes first, and flights will be postponed or canceled if conditions aren’t right. Sometimes the weather clears on the same day, and we can fly later. Sometimes it means moving to the next day. But I always have a back-up location, too. Don’t you worry about that!
This is why I always talk to my couples about mindset before a helicopter elopement. You need to be flexible and ready to pivot, because the weather might throw a curveball. I also saw first-hand how quickly the weather changed up there. Clouds rolled in and out in what felt like seconds.
Choosing Your Helicopter Company
There are a few helicopter companies operating in the Dolomites, and they are also on rescue duty. Which means if there’s a mountain rescue needed, that takes absolute priority over leisure flights, as it should! Some companies are on rescue duty more frequently than others, so it’s worth knowing this when you book.
The company we worked with is less on rescue duty, which gave us more reliability. But there is always a small chance that a larger incident could mean the flight gets delayed. So again, flexibility is key. This is exactly why I always build buffer time into our days and have back-up plans and why having a photographer who is also your planner makes such a difference. I can adjust, pivot, and make sure the day still feels amazing no matter what. 😊
The Flight is Short
The flight itself is not long, but landing time at the spot is where the magic happens. We used every single minute up there. The weather was moving fast, so it was really a game of light and clouds, and that’s also what made it so special.
Is a Helicopter Elopement Right for You?
A helicopter elopement in the Dolomites is perfect for you if:
- Privacy matters a lot to you, and you don’t want other tourists around during your ceremony
- You want something truly unique and unlike any other elopement
- You love adventure and are open to unexpected moments being part of your story
- You’re flexible and trust that whatever happens, it’ll be incredible 😀
- You want photos and an experience that genuinely no one else has
It’s probably not for you if:
- You have a severe fear of heights or helicopters
- You’re looking for the most budget-friendly option (helicopter flights are an investment, but the experience is worth every cent)
